CRAVING for “binignit”, a 55-year-old security guard climbed a coconut tree on Good Friday to harvest a key ingredient, but instead fell to his death.

Placido Gabihan, 55, a resident of Barangay Guadalupe in Cebu City, fell after stepping on a rotten branch of the tree inside a compound in Barangay Canduman, Mandaue City.

Around 7 a.m. last Friday, Gabihan was guarding the abandoned Cebu Design Classics Inc. compound on H. Abellana Street when three women—Nora Mangubat, 37; Chona Galendo, 37; and Marian Buro, 28—approached him.

PO1 Elezar Ramil of the Mandaue City Police Office (MCPO) Investigation and Detection Group (IDMB) said that the three women were reportedly looking for coconuts, when they saw a tree inside the compound where Gabihan worked.

Binignit is a stew of camote, banana, yam, brown sugar and coconut milk, which is traditionally served during the Holy Week.

After approaching Gabihan, the three women asked if he had any fallen coconuts.

But instead of saying no, Gabihan climbed the 35-foot tree, while the women waited below.

Gabihan had gathered four coconuts when he accidentally stepped on a dead branch and fell.

One of the women immediately called for assistance, but when the Emergency Rescue Unit Foundation (Eruf) arrived, Gabihan was already dead. He suffered multiple injuries in his head and body.

Vice President Jejomar Binay confirmed that the three Filipinos convicted of drug trafficking were executed in China on Wednesday.

“I just want to inform you that our three compatriots have been executed, malungkot na araw… Patay na po ‘yung tatlong kababayan natin” Binay told ABS-CBN television and GMA news , citing information from the Philippine foreign affairs ministry.

In a statement, the Philippine government said that it has done everything in its power to stop the executions.

“We have been informed that Ramon Credo, Sally Ordinario-Villanueva, and Elizabeth Batain were administered lethal injections to carry out the sentence imposed by the courts of the People’s Republic of China this morning,” deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said.

“Our government had taken every available opportunity to appeal to the authorities of China for clemency in their cases, to which the Chinese government responded with a postponement of the execution. In the end, however, the sentence was imposed.

“The nation sympathized with the families of the condemned, sharing their sense of looming loss. We sympathize with these families now. Their deaths are a vivid lesson in the tragic toll the drug trade takes on entire families,” she added.

The government spokesperson said that government will “ensure that the chain of victimization, as pushers entrap and destroy lives in pursuit of their trade, will be broken.”

“Those who traffic in illegal drugs respect no laws, no boundaries, and have no scruples about destroying lives. Our response must be relentless, with government and the citizenry working together to ensure vigilance and mutual support to prevent our countrymen from being used by drug pushers as sacrificial pawns, whether at home or abroad,” the spokesperson added.

Scientists have settled a decades-old mystery by naming a cause of death for Japan’s most famous dog, Hachiko, whose legendary loyalty was immortalized in a Hollywood movie starring Richard Gere.

They say Hachiko died of cancer and worms, not because he swallowed a chicken skewer that ruptured his stomach — as legend had had it.

Hachiko was considered such a model of devotion that his organs were preserved when he died in 1935.

For years, Hachiko used to wait at Shibuya train station for its master, a professor at the University of Tokyo. Even after the professor died, the dog went to the station to wait for his master every afternoon for a decade until he finally died.

Tokyo residents were so moved that they built a statue of Hachiko at the station, which remains a popular rendezvous spot for Japanese today. He was also the hero of Japanese children’s books.

The dog’s story turned into a 2009 Hollywood film, “Hachi: A Dog’s Story,” starring Richard Gere — a remake of a 1987 Japanese movie.

Rumors had it that Hachiko died after wolfing down a skewer of grilled chicken — Japanese barbecue called yakitori — that ruptured his stomach.

But University of Tokyo veterinarians examining his innards said Wednesday that they found Hachiko had terminal cancer and also a filaria infection — worms.

Four yakitori sticks remained in Hachiko’s stomach, but they did not damage his stomach or cause death, said Kazuyuki Uchida, one of veterinarians.

“Hachiko certainly had yakitori given by a street vendor at Shibuya,” he said. “But the sticks were unrelated to his death, and the rumor is groundless.”

By Faye Valencia, Yahoo! Southeast Asia

Filipinos’ social media networks were abuzz early this morning because of former Defense Secretary Angelo Reyes’s reported death. The reactions ranged from sympathy to sarcasm. There were also speculations about Reyes’s death.

Reyes, who has been embroiled in a recent military scandal, was alleged to have committed suicide. He reportedly died from a gunshot wound to his chest at the Loyola Memorial Park in Marikina, where he had gone to visit his mother’s grave.

A security cordon is placed around an area where retired Gen. Angelo Reyes reportedly shot himself in front of his mother’s grave in the Loyola Memorial Park in Marikina. (AP Photo/Aaron Favila).

On Twitter, user atomaraullo (ABS-CBN reporter Atom Araullo) revealed, “DOH Secretary Ona: Sec. Angelo Reyes proclaimed dead at 8:32 a.m. due to single gunshot wound to the chest. PNP: wound is self-inflicted.”

And, as “Angelo Reyes” became a trending topic on Twitter and other social media platforms, some users got on the bandwagon almost mindlessly. As jenn4u2luv disclosed, “It feels weird that people are liking ‘Angelo Reyes is dead’ posts on FB and on Tumblr.”

Indeed, Reyes’s death made an otherwise ordinary Tuesday a very tense news day, as the Philippines contributed another tragic conversation piece to the world.

Conspiracy theories

While some users remarked that Reyes’s death had a “creepy” element, others hatched conspiracy theories.

Twitter user nazhzharah’s pointed out that the day was auspicious for another reason: “Bus bombing on Cory’s b-day. Angelo [Reyes’s] death on [Noynoy Aquino’s] b-day! Ano kaya ang mangyayari sa pagdating ng b-day ni Kris Aquino?”

Meanwhile, diamondntheskyy tweeted, “It doesn’t make sense that he’d point the gun at his chest to kill himself rather than his head.”

On Fit to Post (FTP), carlkista theorized, “There’s a great possibility he was set up to come to that place and shot by another person. Shooting yourself on the chest is harder than shooting [yourself] in the head. We want it easy, that’s why [we] commit suicide and do it easy.”

Karambola, another FTP user, mused, “Such a sad way to go. The last footage of him that I saw was last night (February 7, 2011). He was being interviewed. He was not his usual feisty self. Siguro matagal na rin n’yang pinag-planuhan ito—ang kitlin ang sariling buhay, what with the latest revelations from Rabusa about the wives of generals being part of the plunder. Ito na siguro ang nagtulak sa kanya para barilin ang sarili kasi lalabas at lalabas na ang katotohanan.”

Interestingly, somebody quickly set up a spoof Twitter account in the name of Reyes. With the username iamangleoreyes, whoever owns the account tweets as if from beyond the grave. One of his tweets go: “Dear GMA, I’ll wait for you, ha?” And, according to his Twitter bio, his location is in “Limbo.”

Pinoy cynicism

A number of netizens zeroed in on Reyes’s alleged involvement in the rampant corruption in the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

User gabbygobalauag tweeted: “Angelo Reyes’s suicide just gives the Filipino people further reason to continue with probe. Baka dahil namatay, bukas maging hero pa ‘yan!” Another user, yuki2906, echoed this sentiment by saying, “I heard about Angelo Reyes. What a pitiful man. Lesson: Don’t do bad things without an escape plan.”

Meanwhile, FTP user Dennis wrote, “This just shows how guilt can kill a person. The investigation must go on!” For his part, Jerwin Francisco, another FTP user, said, “Dapat siyang tularan ng iba pang malalaking buwaya!”

FTP user Dhey Del Rosario emphasized the fact that what happened to Reyes was but a symptom of a much bigger problem. “I have long admired every member of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA). I’m supposed to send my only son to the academy in the near future because I believe (in) the honesty, integrity, and (bravery) of every cadet who graduates (from) this institution. But, look now, a well decorated alumnus just gave up and showed only that there’s nothing extraordinary about this institution. Ganun daw ang tao pag ‘di na makayanan ang dindalang problema. I pity Sec. Reyes for what he did to himself.”

Ninijerome, an FTP user, referred to the plight of Filipino soldiers, commenting, “Would a general face death rather than dishonor his name? I hope the truth will not die with him. Many soldiers out there live (and have died) without dignity because their generals steal from them.”

Another FTP user hud simply said, “Yung mga sundalo sa Mindanao pwede ko tawagin ‘with honor’ dahil lumalaban kahit walang combat shoes.”

Nostalgia and sympathy

Despite the comments vilifying him, Reyes had some sympathizers and others who remembered him for the role he played in EDSA Dos.

Twitter user shawnyao (TV5’s Shawn Yao) shared her memory of Reyes. “EDSA ’01, when the planes flew overhead, signifying the AFP’s defection. Changed the course of my life. That’s my Angelo Reyes,” she tweeted.

Arlene Azurin, an FTP user, said, “I’m sorry for his family. I’m sorry for justice being killed at his death, too, as he could have given light to the issue of corruption in the military.”

FTP user Marissa wrote, “It’s sad to know that he wasn’t able to defend himself. He deserved due process and not any human judgment. May he rest in peace!”

Ghazni Eshkashem, another FTP user remarked, “Wow. What a brave man. It’s obvious he knows a lot. Maybe he [wrote down some of the names of those] involved in the anomalies [somewhere]. But [he’s] not brave enough to face it.”

Regrets only

Other netizens lamented the fact that Reyes did not get the chance to name names. As FTP user naet said, “May prinsipyong tao. Hindi nakayanan ng konsensya. Pero sana nag-suicide na lang din, sinabi na muna n’ya sana ang buong katotohanan. Iniwan n’yang bitin ang taong bayan at natakpan nanaman ang panglan ng mga corrupt.”

Diggsdman tweeted, “The passing of Angelo Reyes is sad for his family but sadder for a nation that seems never to be able to get to the truth.”

User michellesunga likewise said, “Mr. Angelo Reyes literally took it to the grave. He should have the courage to fight for the truth no matter [what] he was up against.” User op3r quipped, “It seems tragic, as he might have helped clean up the mess. But I guess brotherhood trumped everything else.”

Twitter user heyitslei hit the proverbial nail on the head with her tweet: “Angelo Reyes invokes the right to remain silent…forever.”

SAO PAULO—”Elite Squad 2,” a Brazilian movie mixing explosive action with political intrigue, has become Brazil’s top movie of all time, besting even the US blockbuster “Avatar” at the national box office, producers and industry specialists said Tuesday.

The movie, a sequel to a 2007 original that also became a huge success, has taken 60.5 million dollars in Brazilian ticket sales since its premiere three months ago, topping the 60.4 million dollars “Avatar” pocketed over a similar period, the industry outlet Filme B said.

“The film has grabbed the title of the biggest box office hit in Brazilian cinema history, topping the blockbuster ‘Avatar’ by James Cameron,” the producers of the movie crowed on their website.

The launch of “Elite Squad 2″ in Brazil coincided with a spectacular real-life operation by the crack police squad of its title that swept brutal drug gangs out of a nest of slums in Rio de Janeiro.

It is to get its international showing next month at the Sundance Film Festival in the United States.

By Matthew Belloni Matthew Belloni – Wed Sep 29, 5:11 am ET

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – A trio of stars of Discovery’s hit reality series “Deadliest Catch” have left the show.

Capts. Johnathan and Andy Hillstrand — who were sued earlier this month by Discovery for allegedly not performing work on a planned spinoff special — as well as Capt. Sig Hansen, said in a statement Tuesday that they were “unable” to continue on the series due to the litigation.

“We have been through a lot over the past year and unfortunately given the current situation with Discovery we are unable to continue participating in ‘Deadliest Catch,’” the three crab fishermen said in a joint written statement. “It has been a fantastic ride, and we wish the best to all of the amazing and supportive ‘Catch’ fans we have met over the years.”

A statement from Discovery was not forthcoming.

The network sued the Hillstrands for $3 million claiming they failed to show up to finish work on “Hillstranded,” a planned “Catch” spinoff. The Hillstrands’ lawyer Jeff Cohen then called the suit an attempt to “extort” his clients and said the lawsuit could force them to sell their boats and fire their crews. Hansen, also repped by Cohen, later weighed in, backing the Hillstrands, slamming Discovery and saying, “I want people to know the captains stand together, and me and my brothers support them 100 percent.”

Hansen, captain of the Northwestern, has been a fixture on “Catch” since its first season premiered in 2005. The Hillstrands, captains of the Time Bandit, joined in Season 2. Filming on the seventh season of the Emmy-nominated series is scheduled to begin as crab season starts in October. But barring any reconciliation, it now appears the show will be down three captains (in addition to Capt. Phil Harris, who died earlier this year).
